How does Secret Santa with friends work?

Secret Santa is a game in which everyone in the group prepares a gift for one person. Matches are random: you know your recipient, but not who is preparing a surprise for you.

The organiser creates a game and shares one link in the group chat. Once everyone joins, the service privately reveals each person’s match. Then you can add wishes, choose gifts and meet for the exchange — without paper slips or chat confusion.

Nobody knows every match

Each player sees only the person they are buying for. Even the organiser can play without knowing the results in advance.

The whole group joins through one link

Share the invitation in your chat — friends can join from their phones even if they live in different cities.

A better chance of choosing the right gift

Everyone can leave a few wishes or clues. Santa gets helpful direction while the actual gift remains a surprise.

How do you organise Secret Santa for friends?

All you need is to gather the group, agree on the essentials and leave enough time to choose gifts.

  1. 01

    Create a game

Choose a name, exchange date and a budget that works for everyone.

  2. 02

Send the link to your friends

Share the invitation in your group chat and wait for everyone to join.

  3. 03

    Draw the names

Start the game — every player sees only the person they are preparing a gift for.

  4. 04

    Add wishes and get together

Share clues, prepare surprises and reveal who had whom on the chosen day.

Budget, date and exchange format

Agree on these three things at the start so nobody worries about cost, delivery or deadlines later.

How much should we spend on a gift?

Choose an amount that feels comfortable for everyone. Set a maximum or a small range — a more expensive gift does not make the game better.

What if friends live in different cities?

Agree in advance how to share addresses and the last day for sending gifts. You can open everything together on a video call.

When should we start the game?

Two or three weeks before the exchange is ideal. That leaves time to check wishes, find a gift calmly and avoid express-delivery costs.

What should friends agree on?

Do not turn the game into a long rulebook. A few clear agreements understood by the whole group are enough.

  • State the budget or maximum gift value from the start.
  • Agree whether joke gifts, gift cards, alcohol or treats are appropriate.
  • Ask everyone to add several wishes instead of one exact item.
  • If you are not meeting in person, agree on delivery and a shared opening date in advance.
